AUGUST 2008                                                                   

 

PAVILION BREAKFAST

Have you given the pavilion breakfast a try yet? We want to see you there! Our cooks are great and the atmosphere is pleasant!  Join us for all you can eat French toast, sausage, coffee, and orange juice for $2.00. Bring your own place setting and save fifty cents.  If you want to save another fifty cents, say something in French when you arrive (hints: au revoir, merci, moi, we-we)!  If you want to eat for free, bring a new person! Stop by on Friday, August 15 between 9:00-11:00 a.m. in the pavilion!

 

GRANDKIDS PICNIC

The next Kiwanis pavilion picnic is August 11 at 11:00. Sign up with Andrea (256-3194) by August 6 to reserve your meal.  This meal is free to members thanks to funding from the Kirtland Kiwanis, so thank a Kiwanian when you see one!  This picnic is for grandkids (we will grill hotdogs for them) too so bring yours with you. In addition, we will have the Euclid Beach Rocket Ship present from noon to 1:00.

 

MEN’S PICNIC

If you are a man and looking for some male camaraderie, join us for a men’s picnic on Friday, August 22 at noon in the pavilion. Cost is $2.00 for lunch (grilled strip steak, corn on the cob, tomatoes). Sign up with Jenna by August 20 so that the cooks can prepare the right amount of food.

 

TV CONVERTER TALK

Senator Timothy Grendell will be at our center on August 21 at noon helping seniors better understand the FCC’s upcoming digital television conversion and how it will affect you.  In addition, he will help seniors obtain the form necessary to get converter box vouchers.

 

DRAWING CLASSES

The next session of drawing is from Aug. 11-27. Classes are from 10:00-11:00 on Monday and Wednesday’s for $12. Stay afterwards for open studio time with the instructor (11:00-12:00) for $6.

 

ELECTRONIC MAGNIFIER

If you could use a little help with any reading materials, stop in and learn how to use the center’s electronic magnifier. The machine has a flat screen (like a computer or TV) and has auto-focus.  It can magnify print on items such as prescription bottles, newspapers, books, contracts, and photographs. If you could use a little more help, the magnifier people will be at the center on Monday, Aug. 11 at 10:30 to help you.

 

MASSAGE THERAPY

Have you given our seated massages a try yet? Treat yourself to a relaxing, drug-free healing with a chair massage. Massage dates are August 4 & 18. Cost is $13 for members.

 

PODIATRIST-The podiatrist is here on August 6. Dr. Kelly provides diabetic and geriatric foot care to those in need or those who are unable to reach their feet for proper toenail care. Her fee is $17 and is paid directly to her on the day of your appointment. Make your appointment with Jenna.

 

PICTURE RAIL

Have you seen our new picture rail at the very end of the hallway displaying artwork? We are now displaying artwork from our watercolor painting class! Stop down to see the new artwork our Center members created.

 

ROOT BEER FLOAT TREAT

Stop by on August 6 around noon for free root beer floats. Happy Summer!

 

TREASURE TABLE 

The next Treasure table is from Wednesday, August 13-15 with all new items.  If you would like to donate items to the sale, you may bring them in on Aug. 11-12.  Each sale seems to have something for everyone. Check it out! 

 

BOARD BIRTHDAY BASH

If your birthday is in August, you have a free lunch coming your way from our lunch site on August 8.  Sign up with Andrea at 256.3194 by July 30 to reserve your spot.  Cake, ice cream, and punch are served to all in attendance! Next month’s bash is on September 8 and sign up deadline is August 30. 

 

BLOOD PRESSURE CLINIC is Thursday, August 28 from 10:00-11:00.  Just stop by!

 

WATERCOLOR PAINTING CLASS

Our watercolor painting class is still going strong!  This is a great class to meet new people, have a few laughs, and try something new!  All levels of talent and skill are welcome to pick up a brush and see what hidden talents pop out. Check out the masterpieces displayed at the end of the hall on our picture rail. You will be pleasantly surprised. The next 4-week series is from August 7-28 on Thursday mornings from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Cost is $30 per person.

 

EXERCISE CLASSES

Are you looking to meet new people, increase your energy, and just get out of the house? Try any of our three exercise classes. Classes are for men and women and customized to the fitness needs of adults 55 and over. If you would like to observe a class before participating, just show up!  These classes are free or subsidized to Center members due to funding received from the United Way of Lake County. Classes include: 

 

1) STRENGTH TRAININGMonday and Wednesday (9:00-9:45 a.m.) $14.

Strengthen anything that needs help. These exercises are specific for adults 55 and over.  Join our next session starting on August 4. Hand weights provided; bring a mat or towel.

 

2) TAI CHITuesday & Thursday (9:30-10:30 a.m.) Free. Tai Chi focuses on slow, gentle, guided movements to help strengthen the body and relax the mind. It is an outstanding exercise class for adults of all physical abilities.

 

3) YOGAFriday (9:15-10:30 a.m.) Free. Relax your mind, stretch your body, and strengthen your spirit. Try our senior yoga class. Bring a mat or towel. No class 8/8; in September, yoga class will change. In September, Level II, intermediate yoga will be from 9:00-10:15 and a Level I/beginner yoga class will follow from 10:30-11:30.

 

RED HATTERS

The Red Hatters are slowly regrouping and would like to see you at their next potluck luncheon on Thursday, August 14 at noon. Whether you are a past member or looking to become a new one, stop by!  All you need is a red hat and purple attire. Bring a dish to share and beverages will be provided.

 

BOOK TALK

The next book talk is on August 26 at 10:00.  Join in our little group (about a handful of people) and express your thoughts and opinions for a fun, interesting, and lively discussion. If you are a reader, this is the activity for you!

 

USED EYEGLASSES & HEARING AIDES are collected at the Center and donated to the local Lions club.  A drop-off box is in the lobby under the sign in book.  Gather them up, bring them in, drop them off, and smile because you did something good! The Center is on its second box of collections!  Thank you!

 

CARDS

The card group meets each Friday to play pinochle from noon to 3:00.  Join in if you like. They are always welcoming new players and competition.

 

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

If you are new to the Kirtland Senior Center in 2008, we want to extend to you a big warm WELCOME!  We hope you will join us for lunch on August 13 at 11:00 at our lunch site.  You need to make a reservation by August 6 by calling 256.3194.  A member of the senior board will be here to introduce you to others and show you around.  We are here for you…just stop by!

 

BOCCE BALL

If you would like to learn the game of bocce and meet some new people, stop by for a game on Monday and Thursday mornings.  If you can’t make it on those days but have a group of friends who would still like to play, stop by any day that the center is open and hit the courts. Members of the Eastlake Senior Center will join our group on Monday, August 4 for some friendly competition.

 

LUNCH IN THE PARK

Join in with other Lake County Senior Centers for lunch in the park on Wednesday, August 20 at Painesville Township Park. Laketran will pick you up at our senior center and get you out to the park and back home.  The trip is free but reservations are required. Call 256-3194 to save your spot.

Text Box: REGISTRATION POLICIES
If there is a class with a payment, that payment is due when you sign up.  You are considered signed up when you pay.  Payment is taken on a first-come, first-served basis.  

REFUNDS
Once you have paid for an activity, there are no refunds.  If the senior center cancels an activity due to low enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances, you will be granted a full refund.  Refunds are not given due to changes in your schedule or health.  Refunds are mailed out to your home and take 2—3 weeks to receive.  

HOW DO I REGISTER?
1)	You may register by stopping in the office and dropping off your payment.  Cash and checks are accepted.  Checks are to be made payable to “The City of Kirtland.”  If the office is closed, you may put the payment through the brass mail slot to the office or inside the drop box by the front door.  
2)	You may register through the mail.  Send in your full payment with a note stating the activity you are paying for.  Mailed payments must be received before any deadline.
3)	If there is no cost associated with an activity, email your registration.
